public relations for the financial & professional services

We’ve developed and honed our approach to delivering PR for law firms and barristers over the last 30 years.

That experience will allow your PR and communications work to differentiate you from your competitors and to clearly show your expertise and insight to your chosen markets.

Securing national and broadcast coverage to support our client in a landmark Supreme Court case

A City law firm wanted a high-impact, cost-effective PR programme that would help support its clients in a landmark case being heard at the Supreme Court.

The ruling in the case would have major implications for a significant proportion of the UK’s working population.

We secured multiple opportunities, both before and after the judgement, for key spokespeople at the client to appear on national broadcast media, including ITV News, BBC World News, Sky News, CNBC and LBC radio. We also secured coverage in the Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, City AM and the Evening Standard.

Following the judgment we also secured feature pieces in key employment and legal trade publications, establishing a strong media presence for the lawyers involved in the case.

As a result of the work the clients received overwhelmingly and very high-profile coverage for the case and for the long-term implications of the case. The case and the publicity, led to the wholesale change in the business practices that the clients were looking for.

Using PR to raise the profile of a claimant-only banking practice at a law firm

A Top 50 law firm wanted to raise the profile of its banking litigation practice – a key group for the firm – amongst potential clients, work referrers, and senior decision makers, both at GC level and among C-suite executives in sectors such as fund management.

To achieve this, we put in place a programme of PR activity that focussed on generating regular commentary and research aimed at both improving our client’s brand and reputation in key markets.

By delivering regular comment pieces in the national press, we were able to establish the client as the leading voice on a number of key areas related to their target markets. This increased new business, specifically through work referrals from US law firms and conflicted top 10 firms, and drove revenue growth.

Our work for this firm in the banking sector had a demonstrable impact not only on the amount of coverage they received, but more importantly on the growth of their banking litigation business. It provided the banking litigation sector networking opportunities in different forums that they did not previously have access to.

Some of the areas the client commentated on include:

  • Litigation relating to the manipulation of Forex and LIBOR. Issues created by the introduction of SONIA
  • “Dark pools”, high frequency trading and the flash crash
  • Interest rate swaps mis-selling
  • Disputes between corporate sponsors of pension funds and fund managers
  • Legal claims against “closet indexers”
  • Litigation funders and claims against banks

The package of commentary and bespoke research driven press releases delivered a demonstrable return on investment, leading to increased brand awareness and increased revenue for the banking litigation practice.

Generating High Net Worth sales leads through high impact strategic campaign for a Top 100 law firm

We are experts at understanding and reaching High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth individuals through highly targeted PR programmes. We regularly undertake that work on behalf of financial services providers and for professional services firms.

In the example below our client, a private client law firm, aimed to use compelling PR to boost sales through the generation – and conversion – of High and Ultra High Net Worth leads.

They approached us to design and implement a unique and high-impact campaign to establish them as the go-to authority on topics relating to high-value tax and inheritance issues.
We achieved this by developing a series of national news-generating research-led press releases, containing a powerful mix of proprietary data and expert commentary.

Topics that caught journalists’ attention and resulted in extensive media coverage included:

  • The rise in disputes over trusts
  • Frequency of use of litigation against executors of wills
  • How trusts are increasingly being used to mitigate inheritance tax
  • Broader wealth planning topics

Our approach ensured that we made an immediate ‘big splash’ in our client’s leading target media. Coverage achieved included front-page stories in the Financial Times, The Sunday Times and The Sunday Telegraph – successfully helping to drive our clients’ sales figures.

Establishing our client as a leading commentator on litigation funding – the rapidly growing alternative asset class

Litigation funding has undergone rapid growth as Hedge Funds, Private Equity firms and other fund managers continue their hunt for uncorrelated assets to diversify their investments away from equities and bonds.

Our client, a City-headquartered law firm, wanted to highlight their expertise in advising litigation funders on which legal cases to invest in.

The PR activity related to litigation funding sat within the broader PR activity we undertook for them involving dozens of different projects per year.

To give our client a platform to promote its expertise in the most influential national, international and broadcast media we undertook bespoke research, designed to generate proprietary data on the size of the litigation funding sector.

Mattison Public Relations analysed the annual reports of the Top 25 litigation funders in the UK in order to quantify the scale of the industry. This research has been the only quantitative research into the sector for several years – leaving our client as the most obvious commentator on the sector. The research has generated substantial national exposure in the Financial Times, The Times, and The Economist for the client helping to build their brand amongst litigation funders.

Positioning an international law firm as a leading expert on tax investigations

As well as offering an outsourced press office for law firms, we are often asked to work with specific practice areas to help build their profile and support new business generation.
For one leading international law firm, we worked closely with its tax team to position it as a leading expert on HMRC investigations, tax disputes and enforcement — helping drive inbound enquiries from businesses facing increasing scrutiny.

The programme we put in place delivered consistent, high-value coverage in influential media publications read by senior decision-makers. Through our work, our client was regularly featured in the Financial Times, The Times, Sunday Times, Telegraph and leading tax and accountancy trade media – helping raise its profile with the audiences that matter most.

Our programme included:

  • Researching and drafting press releases based on trends in HMRC investigations and enforcement activity
  • Issuing comments in reaction to breaking news on tax policy and compliance
  • Translating complex HMRC data into clear, compelling stories for the media
  • Building a consistent pipeline of coverage across national, financial and trade publications

Successful topics included:

  • HMRC suspect large businesses of underpaying £1.4bn in employment taxes
  • The average HMRC tax investigation into businesses now lasts 3.75 years
  • The number of wealthy individuals suspected of serious tax evasion doubling to 172
  • HMRC tracking 277 businesses linked to ‘tax havens’
  • New measures targeting the UK’s £46.8bn tax gap as enforcement ramps up
  • HMRC’s use of the Connect system and AI to drive compliance work
